Going Greek
Why going Greek was a great decision for me

It’s spring break and I’m sitting here at my sorority sister’s beach house writing this article. It may or may not also be the day this article is due, but that’s beside the point. The weather has been perfect all week and we have done everything from shopping in Charleston, to visiting friends at the University of South Carolina (USC) and everything in between.
That’s when it hits me. It’s Friday. It’s the end of spring break and I’m just sitting here eating dunkers and milk out of a plastic cup. The realization that I have to go back to reality just hit me like a bus. But for some reason, my mind isn’t focused on the amount of work that has piled up just yet. I’m more focused on the amazing spring break I just had with a group of girls I would have never been friends with, or even know, if it hadn’t been for Greek life.
I go to Catholic University of America (CUA) and Greek life is not big. In fact, there’s only one sorority on campus. Kappa Tau Gamma is a social service sorority specifically at CUA and nowhere else. At first, I was a little upset we weren’t a big national sorority like they have at USC, but sitting here thinking about the amazing spring break I just had with my sisters, none of that matters anymore.
Greek life has been under a lot of scrutiny these days. Wherever you go you are constantly bombarded with news about the mistakes the fraternities and sororities are making at colleges all across the country. Yes, members of these organizations get in trouble, and yes they must be accountable for their actions, but the media forgets that they are still just college age students making mistakes and trying to figure their life out. The media also forgets why these organizations were established in the first place.
Kappa Tau Gamma’s motto is “we can change the world,” and with the bonds I created through this sisterhood, I believe we can do just that. I have grown so much as a person from their love and support. Last year, I attended my Big’s National Honor Society induction ceremony and this year couldn’t wait to attend mine. As a sisterhood, we support each other through the good and the bad. As a sisterhood, we have done service with organizations like the Little Sisters of the Poor. As a sisterhood, we are currently one of the highest donating groups towards Relay For Life.
I’m writing this article because I think people tend to overlook the most amazing aspects of any kind of Greek organization, be it a national one, a local one, a service one, a social one or even a social-service one. I have found if you truly love and support one another in such an organization, you can do amazing things. You can even go on amazing trips, like this spring break one. Yes, we may have had a little too much fun this week, but we also learned a lot about ourselves and each other. We learned about each other’s goals and aspirations, and even our differing political viewpoints and all confusion by the presidential race.
While my dunkers and milk are gone the memories of this amazing week will last me a lifetime. Greek life has afforded me the opportunity to meet so many new people, learn so much about myself and do so many amazing things. People will say what they want to about Greek life, but in my short college experience, I think it is hands down one of the best decisions I have ever made.
