Kappa's Abroad : Jessica Burns


1. Where are you studying abroad?
 Rome, Italy 

 2. Why did you choose to study abroad in Rome? 
I chose to study abroad in Rome due to the vast and diverse amount of architecture. I wanted to study the great architects of the ancient, renaissance, baroque and modern periods. The food was also another perk to Rome. 

 3. What was one of your favorite experiences of studying abroad? 
On our ten day trip to northern Italy with my professors and classmates, we were given the opportunity to spend a day at Val’s Bath’s by Peter Zumthor. Previously, we studied this Bath house in our Modern History class. However, reading and studying compared to actually experiencing are two totally different things with architecture. The bath house is set up so that each room affects one of the senses. Creating my own path in the different spaces of water was one of the most amazing experiences. I never thought in a million years that I would be spending a day in Switzerland, surrounded by the views of the snow covered Swiss Alps, at a Thermal Bath with my professors and classmates. 

 4. Any stories that you have to share? 
One of the projects I was assigned in Studio was to redesign the Jewish section in Rome. We were basically given three days to design an area that would be tourist friendly. However, we were all partnered up with an Italian speaking student that barely spoke any English. This was very challenging to say the least. However, with my basic knowledge of Italian and a lot of drawing, we were able to communicate our ideas. Working with someone from a different country was a wonderful opportunity to learn about their culture and to grow as a student a designer. 

 5. What was your ‘motto’ for studying abroad? 
"Travel and tourism, it must be said, follow different rhythms. Travel means finding yourself through a journey, and letting it change you. Tourism means making a journey with enough cushioning and filtering and micro scheduling to assure that it won't change you." I would advise anyone to live in the moment. Sometimes it is a good thing to put down the map and get wonderfully lost. Some of the best experiences are the unplanned and unexpected.

 6. Do you wish you could stay longer, or are you ready to come home? 
I really wish I could stay longer. I love living and traveling in Europe.

This past fall Kappa Tau Gamma welcomed 17 new girls into the sisterhood!  Fall Recruitment Chair Leilani organized a Jungle themed recruitment with events such as speed dating, cupcake mingle, day at the zoo, ice cream social, and mocktails! Also, shout out to our PNM Educator for the fall, Britany, who helped the girls become sisters. Thanks to the tremendous help of Britany and the rest of KTG, we were able to grow almost 50% this Spring.  All the sisters are very excited to see what the rest of Spring 2018 holds for us!

Paddle Ceremony 2018

Our lovely Seniors  Today we celebrated our seniors with our annual Paddle Ceremony! Congratulations to all of four lovely seniors. We all wish them the very best of luck in their future endeavors! Relay For Life

On April 21st, Catholic University celebrated its 10th Relay for Life on our campus! We had a ton of girls come out and fundraise, and together we raised over $3,000! Kappa Tau Gamma had the 2nd donations from a student organization! We all came together on Friday night to support Relay for Life and had a ton of fun! Our table activity was stress balls which was a hit among many other participants. We enjoyed live performances and rallied together for loved ones who either were suffering or are suffering from cancer. It was a great bonding event for all of us for an even greater cause! I am so proud of all the sister of KTG for the dedication to service and their hard work fundraising for such an awesome and meaningful event!
